Dudley

Burnt Tree

Ends: Ongoing

Last updated: 5 June 2026

What’s happening?

A large investment programme is taking place in the borough of Dudley.

A number of key projects have already been completed with construction for further projects in the town centre and surrounding areas taking place alongside each other over the next couple of years.

MMA Tram construction activity will continue throughout 2026 and the old Dudley bus station site is undergoing a significant redevelopment to become the modern and sustainable Dudley Bus Interchange.

Highway works are also taking place at Burnt Tree Junction to improve bus journey times and help those walking and cycling around the main roads in this area.

Burnt Tree

From 10 November 2025, works will begin on the highway at Burnt Tree Junction in Dudley and on the border with Sandwell.

The project will help buses run faster and make it safer and easier to walk and cycle. New crossings will also connect to paths on the A4123, A461, and routes towards Merry Hill.

What to expect:
  • A phased programme of lane closures on various routes running through the junction
  • Temporary traffic lights
  • Some bus lanes and crossings will close while work takes place

The works will last for up to 9 months and there may be delays to journeys for bus users and motorists.

Overnight resurfacing works and closures

From Monday 22 June to Friday 10 July essential resurfacing, lining and loop cutting works will be taking place on Burnt Tree. Works will be carried out in phases on both the northbound and southbound sides of the route.

All closures will take place on weeknights (Monday to Friday) from 8pm to 6am, with the road reopening outside these hours and signed diversions will be in place.
Northbound closure from Monday 22 June to Friday 10 July
Southbound closure from Tuesday 23 June to Friday 10 July
These works help keep the road safe and in good condition. Please allow extra time for your journey, follow the diversion signs, and check for updates as dates may change due to weather or other reasons.

Bus Stop Changes

Some bus stops may be suspended during these works.

From Wednesday 21 January, 2026, the bus stop outside the Superior Hotel by Arras Road Dudley towards will be temporarily moved for safety reasons due to the installation of temporary traffic lights. A temporary bus pole is being installed nearby.

The main bus routes affected are the 74, 87 and 126.

Service 74 will be split into 2 separate services; buses will run every 15 minutes between Dudley and West Bromwich only, with buses remaining every 5 minutes between West Bromwich and Birmingham. One bus every 15 minutes will be extended to/from West Bromwich to start/finish at Great Bridge. This will mean that passengers travelling from any point between Dudley and Great Bridge to beyond West Bromwich (e.g. Handsworth, Birmingham, etc.) or vice versa will need to change bus at West Bromwich.

Service 87 will have an amended timetable with journey times in the area increased to reflect likely heavier traffic conditions.

Service 126 will have an amended timetable and will be diverted away from Burnt Tree to/from Dudley via Regent Road and Oakham Road.

Other bus services in the area may also encounter some delays travelling within the vicinity of the junction for the duration of the works.

You will be able to get where you are travelling to by bus. Please plan ahead and allow more time for your bus journey.

Pedestrians and Cyclists

For your own safety, please follow all signed pedestrian and cyclng routes through the works area. Burnt Tree Junction will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists.

Other Traffic

To reduce congestion in the area, please avoid travelling through Burnt Tree Junction and use alternative routes where possible.

Travel tips

You will still be able to get to where you need to go, but consider the following:

Consider an alternative route. To reduce congestion, road users are advised to avoid travelling through Burnt Tree Junction and divert to other routes around Dudley, Tipton, Oldbury, and West Bromwich. You may wish to use the motorway to travel to and from Wolverhampton and Birmingham rather than travelling through the affected Burnt Tree junction.
Bus service 74 will be altered and bus service 126 diverted. All other bus routes will not be altered during these works but journeys on 11, 11A, 14A, 87P, 111, 215, and 229. Bus services may take longer so plan your bus journey and allow more time for travel.
Consider changing the time you travel. Avoid peak times where possible especially between 07:00-09:00 and 14:00–16:00 to reduce delays. There will be delays to car and bus journeys by these works. The area sees more congestion at these times.
