The proposed East Birmingham Metro extension to the Sports Quarter is the first step in a long-term vision to improve connectivity across East Birmingham.
Building on the Birmingham Eastside Extension through Digbeth, it will create stronger links between communities, key destinations and future opportunities, with ambitions to extend towards Solihull, connecting Heartlands Hospital, Birmingham Airport and the HS2 Interchange.
Our aim is to open the line to passengers by 2031.
As part of wider investment across Digbeth, the Sports Quarter and the East Birmingham Growth Corridor, the extension will help connect people to jobs, education, culture and leisure, while supporting the regeneration of one of Birmingham's most exciting growth areas - including Birmingham City FC's planned Powerhouse Stadium.
More than a transport project, it represents an opportunity to create better connections, unlock investment and shape a more accessible, inclusive and sustainable future for the city and the region.
Over the coming weeks, we will engage with residents, businesses and key stakeholders in the east of the city to share more on the vision for the extension.
Why East Birmingham?
Home to vibrant communities, independent businesses and major cultural destinations, the area spanning from Digbeth to Bordesley Green, Alum Rock and Small Heath is already changing and has now attracted one of the country’s premier regeneration projects. This includes:
- £11billion of planned investment
- 50,000 expected local new jobs
- 20,000 new homes in the area.
The East Birmingham Metro Expansion and Solihull Metro extension will help connect these opportunities together, creating stronger links between neighbourhoods and the city centre.
