Camp Hill line stations

We’re investing in three new stations on the Camp Hill line in South Birmingham.

This project will provide faster, more reliable transport for people who live or work in the area. It will also mean that train journeys could replace up to 25% of car journeys. This will improve the local area, reducing congestion and pollution.

The new stations will shorten journey times in South Birmingham. They’ll also support the community by:

  • making it easier to travel for work, education or leisure
  • creating more than 130 jobs during construction
  • making it easier for everyone to access the stations

We have appointed VolkerFitzpatrick as our principal contractor to design and build the 3 new stations and work is in its final stages.

Latest work

The finishing touches are being added to all three stations.

At Kings Heath, the contractors welfare area next to the station is starting to be cleared. The area will be handed back to the Council to reinstate to parkland.

One of the design features at Moseley Village is an area that could be used by the community for the popular Moseley Farmers Market.

The large area has plenty of light and relaxed seating and signage with the number of steps down the platform, or you can get the lift.

This area also contains a large covered cycle storage for 52 bicycles and passenger information display units detailing the scheduled departures.

The site at Pineapple Road is being cleared as final snagging works continue. During this phase of testing and commissioning, safety verification and authority to operate as passenger stations, will be issued by the Office and Road and Rail (ORR) in order for the Camp Hill line to be restored to a passenger line.

Artwork has been commissioned to reflect the Heritage of the stations and what they represent for the communities in which they will serve. Work shops have been arranged at the following locations for the public to input into the design by a local artist, Charlotte Jenkins. Please come along to one of the following sessions:

  • Monday 16th February: Kings Heath Community Centre, 8 Heathfield Road 6:30pm until 8:30pm
  • Sunday 22nd February: Pineapple House, 171 Pineapple Road 4pm until 6pm
  • Saturday 28th February: Moseley Hive, 93 Alcester Road 3pm until 5pm

The challenge - why we’re doing this

The 3 original stations in this area closed in 1941, during World War 2, due to coal shortages. Since then, the population of the area has grown. There’s also more commercial activity. This means more people are travelling. All this has led to traffic congestion and long journey times on the roads.

The solution - what the project will do

There will be 3 new stations at Moseley Village, Kings Heath and Pineapple Road. They’ll each have 2 platforms suitable for 6-car trains. The stations will also have:

  • pedestrian footbridges, stairs and lifts
  • ticket machines and information systems
  • passenger help points on each platform
  • secure bike parking

The stations at Pineapple Road and Moseley Village will also have a pick-up and drop-off area.

Shorter journey times

The new stations will make people’s journeys faster.

The estimated journey times to Birmingham New Street are:

  • 14 minutes from Pineapple Road - saving 16 to 31 minutes
  • 11 minutes from Kings Heath - saving 9 to 24 minutes
  • 8 minutes from Moseley Village - saving 7 to 21 minutes
