Take your bike on public transport

You can take your bike on public transport for free. Folding bikes are allowed on all trains, buses and trams in the West Midlands.

You can also take non-folding bikes on most trains, but space is limited. You might have to reserve a spot for your bike.

There’s free bike storage at all our tram stops, train and bus stations.

Planning to take your bike on the train?

Some train operators, including Chiltern and Avanti West Coast, allow motorised cycles (e-bikes). You will need to check the rules for each operator before you travel.

West Midlands Railway and CrossCountry allow a limited number of non-folding bikes.

Avanti West Coast requires a free reservation before boarding.

Folding bikes count as luggage.

Rules for taking your bike on the train

These rules apply for all of our trains, regardless of the operator you travel with.

You must not leave your bike unattended. You must use the train’s cycle storage area for your bike.

You cannot take any of these on the train:

  • motorbikes
  • mopeds
  • motor scooters
  • e-scooters
  • tandem bikes

Train operators in the region also have their own rules for travelling with your bike. Find out the extra rules for your journey on the operator’s website:

Look out for signs on the train – these will tell you what to do if you're unsure.

There’s also guidance for cyclists on the National Rail Enquiries website. You can find out about:

  • rules for bikes on trains in other regions
  • bike storage facilities at train stations across England, Scotland and Wales
