Covid-19 Bus Services Support Grant

Transport for West Midlands, part of the West Midlands Combined Authority, has been allocated funding to the value of £4,194,181.44 by the Department for Transport as part of the Covid-19 Bus Services Support Grant. 

The purpose of this funding is to provide financial support towards the provision of tendered bus services, reflecting the fact that fare revenues have reduced due to reducing passenger numbers because of the Covid-19 pandemic. This funding was applicable for the period 17 March 2020 to 31 August 2021.  During this period, patronage on bus services dropped to as low as 10% of pre-covid levels and recovered to approximately 65% at the end of the period of funding.

The funding has been utilised as follows;

TFWM cost’s - £391,842.06

Cost’s incurred by TfWM include enhanced cleaning, provision of additional roadside infrastructure to enable social distancing and provision of comprehensive off-board passenger information to communicate the key messages, reflecting national guidance, for travelling on local bus services.

Additional Journeys to Support Social Distancing - £240,178.57

Provision of additional journeys to provide additional capacity on the network to allow passengers to observe social distancing requirements.

Bus Operator support - £3,562,160.81

Revenue support and contribution towards safe operating costs.
